Location: Desert of Central Utah

The largest Plein Air (on location) painting I’ve done. This painting was created on a trip where I spent one whole day in a hot canyon in Utah painting desert scenes. At first glance, this painting doesn’t contain anything overly unique for a desert scene, but I was drawn to the dramatic color variety – particularly in the shadows of the rocks. There’s an interesting dance of color that can happen in the desert, even on the hottest, grayest, and most “unpleasant” days of the year, and I love the idea of putting that on canvas.
