The lawman finds himself in a tight spot and in need of, what you might call, a little evening of the odds.

The sawed off shotgun (scattergun) was a useful tool in the old west. Its primary use found its way into the hands of those who were outnumbered, in a pinch, and did not have a great need of accuracy. Often times hot tempers were cooled just from the sight of this weapon being present. A sheriff facing an angry mob, a bartender dealing with a bunch of unruly cowboys, or a woman alone at home, all had practical use for the shotgun.

Note: Sometimes those who found a use for a shotgun sawed off part of the barrel. This did two things:

It made the weapon easier to maneuver, and made the scatter pattern of the shot even wider.
