These whimsical paintings of Santa done by Tom have a history that spans over four decades with the first one being created in 1980. Done merely for Tom’s own amusement, this painting was spotted by a well-known publisher that was visiting his studio. As that company changed course, and with a proven track record, the publishing of Santa designs was pursued by the Browning’s as they started their own publishing company in 1984 called Santa’s Time Off. He was soon painting two to four new Santa designs a year as the company took off and grew. With several employees and a spacious warehouse, Joyce, Tom’s wife would ultimately supply over 4,000 accounts across the country. As Tom became known as the premier painter of Santa Claus, manufactures around the world began licensing these designs for their own products that included puzzles, gift bags, wrapping paper and cookie tins, to mention a few. In 2008 Tom was commissioned to paint a series of scenes that would illustrate the classic The Night Before Christmas by Clement C Moore. Some of the original Santa paintings have been sold to private collectors over the years until the this show at Legacy Gallery.
