Shields were made from the thick neck or hump hide from an older buffalo bull, to protect the brave from being wounded. The symbols adorning the shield were very important, giving spiritual protection. There were many responsibilities that went with shield ownership and specific songs or prayers were given when handling or putting it on. Only the owner of the shield was allowed to adorn it with their specific medicine, and in this painting one brave was describing it to his comrade. His new shield was decorated with painted symbols and ermine skins, to give him the gift of swift movement and craftiness.
