Symbolism was an important part of the Plains Indian culture. A brave would often paint his horse to represent an act of bravery or impart a special power when riding into battle or a hunt. Colors were made from natural pigments and trading with the settlers, such as the vermillion seen here. After dipping a finger in buffalo grease and then powdered pigment, the paint was applied. Here, the lightning bolt was meant to impart fear and to blind the enemy, as well as help the horse run fast.
