About this artist

Anton Nowels is a contemporary painter focusing primarily on the West and combining traditional oil painting with Impressionism and Abstraction.

Nowels is both a Signature Member of the Oil Painters of America (OPA) and the American Impressionist Society (AIS). Nowels won an Honorable Mention in Landscape at the Oil Painters of America (OPA) National Exhibition in 2022. He participated in the Brinton Museum’s Residency program in Big Horn, Wyoming, that same year and continues to participate in exhibits there.

As a workshop instructor at Scottsdale Artists’ School and Winslow Art Center, Anton teaches and explores color theory approaches employed by Charles Hawthorne, Henry Hensche, Sergei Bongart, and Josef Albers. Nowels paints a variety of subjects and experiments with painting techniques. He primarily self-represents, but his work has been included in several prestigious galleries including The Maynard Dixon Legacy Museum in Mt. Carmel, Utah.

Nowels has studied both contemporary and fine art. At Scottsdale Artists’ School, he earned scholarships to study with Ned Mueller, Camille Przewodek, and Romel de la Torre. At Arizona State University, he studied Interdisciplinary Art and explored contemporary art practices, including performance, installation, and video.

Currently, Nowels is working on a larger scale and exploring the connection between traditional painting and installation art.

This year, he taught in-person workshops in Tennessee and the Netherlands. Anton also teaches private students in person and online.
